In ancient times the Himalayan area was divided into many small kingdoms and principalities at the intersection of powerful China and India with their ancient Hindu or Buddhist cultures. In the West is a strong Islamic influence, while in the east the animistic tribal cultures of Southwest-China and Burma prevail. Together this unique mixture of styles, traditions, arts and lifestyles cannot be found anywhere on earth. The cultural diversity is exceptional.

In addition the types of landscapes also vary greatly. Bizarre deserts with green valley in the west, rice in the south, damp mountain forests in the east and the all dominant eternal ice in the north hanging like a string of pearls from Afghanistan to southern China.
