India’s Northeastern region is a garden Eden to the botanical traveller and especially to orchid-enthusiasts. The region’s diversity in orchids is amongst the world’s highest. Over five-hundred varieties grow in the humid jungles and rhododendron forests. To see them in bloom in their natural habitat is in itself an unforgettable experience. Of the 2200 varieties of rhododendron and azaleas more than 60 alone call Sikkim their home. India’s Northeast is also the land of many other rare and unique plants, herbs and trees amongst which the tall Himalayan rhubarb (Rheum nobile) or Kasturi Kamal (Saussurea gossypiphora) that looks like woolly snow-ball are two of more exotic high-altitude plants. Alpine flowers including members of the family of gentian and primula - of which there are 60 in Sikkim alone - along with members of the Meconopis-family, including the most alluring blue poppy with its perfect poise and astonishing clarity of blue.

Many of the rare plants grow in places that are not easy to access or in nature reserves that can be accessed only on foot (trekking) and require a special permit. A large number of nurseries that are specialized in breeding wild or hybrid orchids and government-run orchid green-houses can easily be accessed by road.
